People living with sight loss in the Black Country have been given a real boost thanks to the generous support of local plant nursery and garden centre, Ashwood Nurseries.

Ashwood Nurseries has presented Beacon with a cheque for £24,859. The money will be used to help fund the care and support offered to blind and visually impaired people at the Beacon’s Independent Living Centre in Sedgley.

Martin Rock, independent living skills team leader, at the Beacon Centre said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone at Ashwood Nurseries, and all its customer, for raising this amazing amount of money for us. It will enable us to continue supporting local people who are living with sight loss.

“At our Independent Living Centre in Sedgley we help people with visual impairments to maintain their independence, by helping them to learn new skills, such as cookery and using IT equipment. We also provide a wide range of social activities, such as arts & crafts, sporting events and exercise classes; activities that many of our customers thought they could never take part in again after losing their sight.”

Supporting local charities is very important to Ashwood’s; each year it chooses a different local charity to raise money for. Barbara Cartwright, Ashwood Nurseries’ Charity Co-ordinator explained: “John Massey, Ashwood’s owner, chose Beacon as our charity of the year 2017 because he admires the work that the charity does in helping local people with sight loss.

“The Beacon’s mobile advice service, the Beacon Bus, visits Ashwood Nurseries on a regular basis offering free advice and support to our customers who have questions or concerns regarding sight issues.”

Ashwood’s raised the £24,859 by holding regular open days for its three acre private garden, John’s Garden, and by offering guided Hellebore Tours – a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes and discover the fascinating story behind its award-winning hellebores.

“We were also fortunate to receive a number of individual private donations from our wonderful customers and friends and we would like to say a big thank you to anyone who supports our charity in any way, no matter how small”, Barbara Cartwright went on to say.

Ashwood Nurseries has announced that WINGS of Wombourne is its charity of the year for 2018. WINGS supports children and young people with special needs, providing an opportunity for them to socialise, make friends and have fun together in a safe and encouraging environment.

John’s Garden will be open on Saturday February 10th 10am-4pm, entrance is £5, and all proceeds will be go to Ashwood’s new 2018 charity.
