Beacon is kicking of 2020 by challenging the Black Country to complete 10,000 miles over the year and help it raise money for the blind.

With the New Year well under way the charity is appealing to fitness fanatics and newbies alike to sign up and help smash the 10,000 Miles Beacon Challenge by walking, running, swimming, cycling or any other exercise. But don’t worry, you have all of 2020 to help Beacon reach its target and raise as much money as possible for blind and visually impaired people.

Beacon CEO, Lisa Cowley, who has also signed up to the challenge, said: “2020 is a huge year for us as we start to celebrate 10 years of being in our new building with a bang. Christmas is over and we all know that feeling of having a few too many mince pies and notice our waste line get bigger. So what better way to get back into shape, lose weight and raise money for a local cause than by signing up to our biggest challenge ever. Even if you’re not keen on sweating it out, you can always join by logging daily walks or taking the dog out.”

Participants can join online for a fee of £10 from which £9.50 will be donated to Beacon. You can link your Strava account, log your progress and see how many miles you and fellow participants have clocked up. There are even useful tips to help support your fitness plan.

Harry Bhatoa, Beacon Physical Wellbeing Officer, added: “We all know the benefits of exercise. While physical activity may not directly affect your eyesight, it could affect other health issues like diabetes which can lead to diabetic retinopathy and threaten your sight. Our specialist health and wellbeing centre can help those living with diabetes and other long-term conditions, such as heart disease and stroke, with a health and wellbeing program.”

The charity is also using the opportunity help create awareness around its 10-year anniversary in its new building.

Lisa added: “As a charity a lot has changed over the last 10 years. However, one thing remains constant, the cost of running Beacon and supporting the sight loss community. Like most charities we are facing challenging times, but 2020 is your chance to show your support for a local cause and love your local charity. Sign up now and get your friends, family and colleagues involved to help us smash 10,000 miles and make a real difference to your local charity.”

To sign up, visit and complete the online form. Registration costs £10, plus a booking fee, and money raised will go towards supporting the sight loss community.
