A charity football tournament in aid of Beacon handed over a £10,000 cheque at the charity’s Sedgley centre on Monday 30 July.

The mammoth total was raised from the J.W. Hunt Cup competition which took place last season. The tournament was played over four rounds which saw 32 teams battling it out – resulting in Atherstone Town F.C taking home the trophy. The cheque was presented by J.W. Hunt Cup President, and lifetime supporter, Alex Hamil MBE which was received and welcomed by Beacon customers and staff.

The J.W. Hunt Cup has been running since 1926 and originally involved local businesses from around Wolverhampton. Since its inception the tournament has helped raise over £340,000 for Beacon. Although the teams over time have changed the principles of the cup remain the same – with all money raised going to Beacon to help those living with sight loss.

Alex Hamil MBE, said: “This year’s tournament was another huge success and it’s great to see such strong community support for the competition. It is a privilege to hand over this cheque to Beacon. We have been supporting the charity for over 90 years and since my time I have seen the huge difference they make to the lives of those living with sight loss. I am already looking forward to the next season and hope to be back here again next year handing over another cheque.”

Arwyn Jones, CEO at Beacon Centre, added: “The J.W. Hunt Cup has supported us over many decades. We rely on the generosity of the local community through initiatives like this. I would like to thank everyone on the behalf of Beacon for their kind donations. As well as raising funds the cup is helping increase awareness and helps shine a light on our vital work.”
