While most children are spending their summer holidays in playgrounds, funfairs or museums,  Beacon invited employees’ kids to spend the day at work with them.

Children experienced life at work and learned about their parents’ job and responsibilities. But it wasn’t all serious, kids also had a chance to create their own personalised craft items in Beacons Fab Lab which was recently opened last month. The Fab Lab aims to help those living with sight loss to learn state of the art digital and design skills which may even help some find employment as well as generating income from sales of products manufactured to support the charity.

Matt Harrison, Technology Innovations Manager at Beacon, said: “Today is all about giving children an insight into our lives at work. The kids were amazed to see the 3D printer and laser cutter in action. We had lots of fun designing personalised items like mugs and bedroom signs. It has also been a great way of showcasing all the amazing work we do in the Fab Lab and help generate awareness.”

Sophie Higgins, Partnership Development Manager, brought her children to work for the day: “Both my daughters were excited to see my place of work. They learned about what I do on a day-to-day basis and how my role makes a difference to the many people living with sight loss in our community. They also had a chance to make their own bookmarks which went down a treat.”
