A football tournament in aid of the Beacon Centre, supporting those living with sight loss, has raised over £10,000 for the charity.

The J.W. Hunt Cup takes place over four rounds with games played throughout the season. 32 teams battled it out in the knock out cup which saw thrilling goals, results and dramatic last-minute winners. The final took place on Tuesday 22nd May, between Atherstone Town F.C and Wolverhampton Sporting Community Football Club. After a long-fought 90 minutes, Atherstone Town nicked a late winner and were crowned champions 1-0.

The J.W. Hunt Cup has been running strong since 1926 and originally involved local businesses from around Wolverhampton. Since its inception the tournament has helped raise over £320,000 for the Beacon Centre. Although the teams over time have changed the principles of the cup remain the same – with all money raised going to the Beacon Centre to help those living with sight loss.

J.W. Hunt Cup President and lifetime supporter, Alex Hamil MBE, said: “This year’s tournament has been another huge success and it’s great to see such strong community spirit around the local area cheering on the players. All the teams that have taken part have played excellent football and worked tirelessly to raise this mammoth total. We would like to thank AFC Wulfrunians and Walsall Wood FC for making their facilities available and their generous support.”

Beacon Centre is a well-established West Midlands charity which was founded in the Black Country and has since expanded. The charity, which is based in Sedgley on the Wolverhampton Road, makes a visible difference to people living with sight loss and helps raises awareness.

Arwyn Jones, CEO at Beacon Centre, added: “The J.W. Hunt Cup has supported us for over 90 years and since our inception the Beacon Centre has relied on the generosity of the local population through initiatives like this. I would like to thank everyone on the behalf of the Beacon Centre for their kind donations and helping organise the tournament. As well as raising funds the cup is helping increase awareness and helps shine a light on our vital work.”
