Four keen golfers will play 18 holes wearing simulation specs, to experience playing golf with a sight loss condition, on September 20 at The Chase Golf Club in Penkridge to help raise money for Beacon.
Katrina White, Simon White, Jamie Lowman and Stephen Terry all signed up to the challenge to help support Beacon and its vital work in Staffordshire. The sight loss charity recently expanded its work into the County in order to reach more people affected by sight loss and is keen to raise funds for its work and highlight the new disability golf programme.
Stephen Terry, Regional Manager for Beacon, explained: “Katrina, Simon and Jamie are all close friends and keen golfers. Once I told them about my role at Beacon and the new disability golf scheme they wanted to be involved right away.”
“We wanted to do something different so decided to complete a full round of golf wearing simulation specs to give us a sense of what playing Golf with sight loss is like. Trying to hit the ball whilst experiencing life through the eyes of someone living with conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts will be tough. However, knowing we’ll be raising funds to support people living with sight loss will spur us on.”
Simon White, Chase Golf Club Course Manager, Katrina White, Chase Golf Club Pro and Jamie Lowman, Gas Engineer and golf enthusiast, will be teeing off at 10am with the aim of raising as much money as possible for Beacon and raising awareness of the new disability golf coaching course launching in October.
Steve added: “For many of us access to sports is not an issue, but imagine living with sight loss or another disability and trying to join in. This is the reality for many people.”
Beacon is reaching out to the sight loss community and people living with disabilities that want to take part in sports but find access a barrier.
Katrina added: “With the support of The Chase Golf Club, Beacon, our members and the community we can use golf as a way of improving the health and wellbeing of many people living in isolation or struggling to access sports. We want to encourage the local community to show their support for Beacon and its work.”
Beacon CEO, Lisa Cowley, said: “It’s great to see a local golf club supporting and backing inclusion in sport. As much as fundraising is vital to us, like any charity, we also want to raise awareness and help educate people around the barriers people living with sight loss face. I would like to personally thank everyone involved in the event and all those who donate towards the team’s challenge.”
