Beacon recently reopened the VI (visually impaired) Hub in Hanley – previously known as RNIB Resource Centre – and is now opening its doors to the sight loss community around Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent for a Drop-in session.

The free Drop-in session, which is also open to volunteers, will take place on 1 May from 1-4pm at The Forecourt on Albion Street. Guests will have a chance to see the new improvements and better understand how Beacon can support those living with sight loss.

Stephen Terry, Beacon’s Regional Manager, said; “We have been working hard to improve the VI Hub and we are now eager to show the public what’s on offer. You will be able to see first-hand our range of Low Vision equipment and aids, meet members of the social groups who meet at the Hub and try some of the smart technology which helps those living with VI remain independent.

“This is also a golden opportunity for any budding volunteers to see how they can help make a difference in their community by offering some of their time. And of course, there’ll be free refreshments and cheesy oatcakes in honour of Staffordshire Day.”

Beacon recently confirmed it took over the day-to-day management of the facility which was recently refurbished in early April.

Beacon CEO, Lisa Cowley, added: “The work Beacon does in the Black Country has a great reputation and it’s now time we replicated that in Staffordshire. This is a great opportunity to get to grips with the new facility and understand how Beacon makes a difference – it’s one not to be missed. We are encouraging everyone in the local area affected by sight loss and potential volunteers to join us on 1 May.”

There’ll also be other local sight loss organisations at the Drop-in, including Update Talking Newspaper, Blind Veterans and RNIB, who will discuss the support they offer and volunteering opportunities.

Stephen added: “We know the services offered in the past were important for the local visually impaired community. However, we are also aware there is scope to improve and that’s why are eager to show everyone the new changes and revamped facility.”
