Gwen Davis has been volunteering at Beacon for over ten years. Gwen visits two blind parents every week to help support them with personal tasks and provide social companionship. Gwen normally arrives in the morning and helps them read through the mail, read to the children if they are on holiday and generally help in a busy family environment.
Gwen mentions: “Shortly after retiring I wanted to do something meaningful with my spare time and volunteering was something that interested me for a while. I found the advert for volunteering at Beacon in the Stourbridge Newspaper and applied straight away.”
Gwen highlights the satisfaction, the purpose she gets from volunteering and why she enjoys the time she spends with those she supports.
“The family is amazing and always thank me. I don’t mind going out of my way for them as I know they sometimes need that little bit of extra help some days. I am not sure how they would cope without the support of volunteer programs like this.”
Gwen is always encouraging others to volunteer for Beacon and highlights the great feeling she gets from helping out.
“Volunteering has also been something I enjoyed doing over the years and I feel it’s a great way to use up your spare time. If you can give some time I would highly recommend helping out at Beacon as volunteers make a huge different to the sight loss community.”
